The WordPress plugin for managing .htaccess rules without cringing in horror, or wondering whether they're actually working. my first stabs at hacking .htaccess were alright, but it was basically guess > pray > test > fail > repeat. redirection doesn't have any sort of RegEx constructor (it allows regex, but there's no "click here to redirect anything inside the 'blog' folder). What it does have are logs.

I've been wondering why my site fares so well in google searches for slayer, but my post about slayer gets zero traffic. Apparently it's some danish idiot hotlinking the photo (see chart). And a couple myspace idiots, not realizing that I got the original from myspace, and hotlinking mine, rather than using the original properly.


redirection logs

So far, I'm realizing that the hotlink ban doesn't prevent the danish forum from from poluting my logs. I'm also having difficulty determining if the block is actually working. for everything else, though, the logs work amazingly. Especially at catching my typos. :oops:

The .htaccess rules I'm using are:

Which seems to only make the hotlinked image go away, not actually replace it with my south-park-plus-web2.0-gradient image. boo.

  • case 1 - virb.com: since signing up, i have been bombarded by friend requests from bands, and have visited their pages to find customized pages and music samples. this is one part of the myspace experience. although it's been championed by the grown up myspace haters for it's visual panache, it's not something i want a part of.
  • case 2 - facebook.com: since signing up, i have been plunged into old friendships that have been buried by time and distance. it's the same experience i had when i added my real name to my myspace profile. except with less blinking text, annoying music, and ugly slideshows.
  • using the 'posted items' feature on facebook led me to understand which sites value my presence there, via the meta description tag on my profile pages:
    • case 1 - Last.fm:

    for flickr, i am an advertising vehicle. last.fm does their advertising in the description of their home page, not my profile:

lest you think that my tolerance for autoplaying music on wordpress.com comes from an egalitarian respect for mass customization, you should know that i am one of those people who has a myspace profile for their cat.
Now stop judging and go make friends with sparky. or she'll stick her asshole in your face. actually, she'll probably do that anyway. deal. :P

from your myspace home page, go to account settings > privacy settings > disable band songs from automatically starting. you can also auto-decline all those bands that spam you. if only there were such an option for the porn site bots.

UPDATE:

myspace has changed their music setup.  this trick no longer works. and it never worked for video, so, there ya go.
