Description: Mass Customization in Digital Media: Prefabricated Row Houses, designed for a typical chicago lot (125'x25').

direct v.

two ways of looking at
direct effects animationa reversal. instead of space defining the rooms, the rooms have the power to define the space around them. interest is created where two or more rooms overlap

This movie requires Flash Player 8

indirect

the same idea
indirect effects animationin addition to a representation of air moving through the project. as the rooms shape the "air", the air reshapes the grid.

Layering

simple deformation1: a simple configuration deforms a plane
the room makes a simple bubble shape

This movie requires Flash Player 8

2: each room is represented by a single layer.
the rooms are acted on by seperate waves

This movie requires Flash Player 8

3: the deformation is continuous, generating a distinctive form

This movie requires Flash Player 8

4: with all the floors in place, interpretation begins

Modeling

From animation to model:

given the composite results of the animation, the geometry was extracted from areas where rooms formed complimentary or antagonistic relationships. the geometry and relationships were explored and expanded across the site.

Inhabiting

Inhabiting the geometry:

the spaces suggested by the layered relationships of the animation are reinforced and extrapolated into inhabitable rooms. the form must also have a constructible logic. a rib structure is used to compliment the undulating curves. floors must be cantilevered from the west wall. a membrane in the rear of the house contains the kitchen.

Context

Putting the idea into its surroundings:

understanding the building inside the site. this building sits in a row of townhomes. although the geometry of this house is different, the footprint and program match the typology of the rowhouse

Panel Details

each panel integrates ribs and skin. the combination handles both compression and tension forces. the panels are connected at the ribs by a steel pin which is ribbed to accept epoxy. the shear and torsion forces at the panel connections are taken by either an epoxy bond or a galvaniized plate. the panels are stiffened at the edge to maximize surface area.

Materials

phenol resin
carbon fiber (sheet)
carbon fiber honeycomb
