Buckshot Ep. 9: Themes

  • default gravatar imageDisconnected 1.3 is out. It includes support for WordPress 2.3's native tagging, and preliminary support for WordPress 2.5's get_avatar() function. I know I said I'd never support gravatars1, but since they're going native in 2.5, there's no point in fighting anymore. At least once 2.5 is released, I can write a plugin to use MyBlogLog Avatars instead.
  • The design vitality WordPress Theme Contest ended, with some actual results. I'm kind of shocked. But then, they did add their own spammy footer link to the themes, which is also shocking, but more what I expected from the outset.
  • The Lunarpages contest, however, has not yet published results. This is because, like the many wordpress theme contests before it, it has ended in bitterness and accusations.
  • charcoal theme for habariThere's a new theme for habari, I think it's the first fully original theme. It's a beauty, evoking the sleek monochromatic habari dashboard, and including a bunch of custom plugins. It's called Charcoal, and it's hosted on google code, although the code isn't up there, so there's no SVN updating.

  1. Since they provide identity without authentication, a sure recipe for abuse

I see no proof that DV have dispatched any prizes  As for Lunarpages, what did they think was going to happen when they launched a popularity contest with $1000 on offer for the winner? It’s got to be worth breaking out the bots for.

That Habari theme looks slick. I need to update my test install, disable my lame broken Sandbox port and give it a test run. :)

yeah, dispatching prizes would be very out of character for wordpress theme competitons ;)

My urges to attempt habari theming keeping being put in check by the repeated rewriting of theme functions. A sandbox port would be great, though.

I always l liked that disconnected theme. Now if I can only figure out how to install Apache on Vista and get it to work I can try it out.

So much drama in the WordPress community, almost as entertaining as election coverage, or “Next Top Model”. ;)

XAMPP is usually the easiest way to get apache set up on a windows box, although I haven’t yet tried it on Vista.

Looks like LP finally announced a winner.
