it certainly is the best option. even for theme authors, depending on someone else's license isn't optimal.

Designing your own or using a blank template to build upon is the best option. Not that I've had time to do this but still.

You know they’re going to tell you that everyone’s going to replace it with their own custom header anyway so it’s not a problem, right?

i wouldn't be surprised by a "it's just blogs on the internet" response, but i do expect them to have a more professional response.

Hmm, wonder if inclusion on wordpress.com was another sweetener to get him to switch licences?

it'd be an odd sweetener, since the theme was always GPL. nonetheless, it's well put together, warm and dark, and i think makes a decent addition, so i'm not bothered.

there’s an out-of-control feeling about what’s going on at wordpress

yeah, that seems to be the problem with a commercial service being run by the lead developers of an open source project. all the natural things that happen to a project as it matures are being taken personally by matt. open source isn't about control, it's about freedom. by contrast, wordpress.com is a controlled environment, maintained by automattic. there's bound to be some missteps, as they fail to distinguish between their userbases. there's no reason that this GPL fanaticism should affect users here, since a fair chunk of the code we're running his is already proprietary.

Trying to make head or tail of what's going on with themes, their attribution, copyright, embedded advertising links, personality politics and political maneuvering can bring on a migraine. I don't know the ins and the outs. All I know is that there's an out-of-control feeling about what's going on at wordpress these days and that it troubles me.

Hmm, wonder if inclusion on wordpress.com was another sweetener to get him to switch licences?

Alternatively, I wonder if the pressure to switch licences wasn't as much connected with wanting to use his themes on wp.com as with getting publicity for the Cause?

You know they're going to tell you that everyone's going to replace it with their own custom header anyway so it's not a problem, right? They're probably gambling on being too insignificant for Dreamworks' lawyers to bother with.
