Are you sure?

spam karma plus akismetNo sooner did the words "i'm quite pleased with akismet" cross my keyboard, than it started failing miserably. Not just: oh, it missed a couple, re-check queue for spam. Akismet has been asserting that my spam is, in fact, ham, no matter how many times i ask it.

So, after some 20-odd months and 25 thousand spams, I'm switching off of akismet. sort of. Spam Karma is great, but akismet still has a few tricks up its sleeve. There's a plugin1 to use akismet as part of spam karma. so if you have trouble commenting, send an email to wp-admin [at] archgfx [dot] net2.

I miss the "set it and forget it" of akismet, but that was kind of a pipe dream. SK2 is excessively fiddly, but on the other (far less popular) journals i use it on, it hasn't required any fiddling. Here, unfortunately, it requires a lot of fiddling, since the plugin defaults to a +7 karma for an akismet false positive. since akismet's accuracy is about 50/50 these days, that just doesn't make sense. So i turned down the strength of that plugin, and turned up the strength of SK as a whole.

I’ve been facing the same problem … I am getting a lot of single word spam comment with words like nice, interesting, cool. I think I’ve marked more than 50 such comments as spam but yet akismet seems to let them in. I thought it was intelligent enough to fig this out after some time. :(

I’ve had a lot of luck using Bad Behavior with Akismet. You might give that a try. Bad Behavior cuts down most of the garbage before it even gets to Akismet.

i’ll give BB a try. it’s disconcerting that while when akismet/SK2 throw false positives, i can still rescue the comment, but if BB throws a false positive, i’ll never know. it’d be nice if at a minimum, BB could start by importing all previous commenters’ IP’s to a whitelist.
