FWIW, i wouldn't currently purchase a DRM CD either, and i (almost) never by from member labels of the RIAA.

however, after reading and listening to robert weber, i have to agree with him. if every artist could DRM their own CD's in a system where i could use that music anywhere i wanted, but still couldn't share it with an unlimited number of internet users, i would buy that CD.

currently, that system doesn't exist (i'd have to buy a song 3 times to listen to it at work, at home, and on the train.), and even if artists self-published, itunes and MSN music directories aren't open, so they wouldn't stand to benefit from it.

my big issue with the petition is that hundreds of slashdot idiots will sign it, and continue to use PGP signatures and other forms of DRM, without acknowledging the inherent hypocricy. most of them object to DRM only because they don't want to pay for music, and don't understand the problem of the artist getting paid.

in fact, i don't think we've missed the point at all. we *are* boycotting the companies that are using certain technologies. we are doing so because we disagree with their use of DRM (although, of course, i can think of many other reasons to boycott the RIAA.) so in fact, we're not blaming the technology inherently, we're blaming its implementation by the so-called "content owners" and "rights holders." (don't you love how those so blatantly leave no reference to the creators?)
