Last Night melanie was off in evanston having a slumber party, so, i got to hang out and be all the loser i could be. after devouring a grilled stuffed burrito, i sat down to finish watching Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. I really wanted to like the movie. really. i absolutely loved the first Final Fantasy Movie, despite the fact that no one else did. It's hardly surprising, given CG is a fair chunk of what i do for a living. So a film that does it so well it's nearly real, and asks to be considered as a film in it's own right? yeah, i'm in. The Spirits Within is a really beautiful story in it's own right, and the film is executed to perfection.
FF VII: Advent Children, however, is not a sequel to The Spirits Within. it's a sequel to FF VII, the squaresoft game from a decade ago. As such, the movie isn't really a movie, as much as a 2-hour episode. The story doesn't stand on it's own at all. I've played 1 demo of one of the FF games. that is not enough to put the movie into my realm of understanding.
To make matters worse, where The Spirits Within is cinematographic, and attempts to exist in 'real' world, Advent Children exists in video game space. There are 3 huge battle scenes, where characters battle at high speeds moving in one direction, without any means of propulsion for a good 15 minutes. At best, this is anime. which is fine, i like anime, but it's a waste of CG talent. the scenes are insanely slick, but it's like 2 hours of videogame cutscene.
After the movie was over, i found this:

via gravestmor. now that looks a bit more promising.
anyway, the other thing i did, was implement Lightbox JS as a gallery on my Grand Egyptian Museum Renderings page. (if there wasn't enough CG in this post for you already) Check it out. i think it's much better than the AGAL script i was using. but i'm not everyone. if there are problems, let me know. i also started adding the sitewide menu i've been meaning to for months. except that it's looking more trendy than i meant it to. then again, if i'm already using an AJAX gallery, what's the difference?
i think once upon a time i used to have a life.

I LOVED
Darn it, finger slipped. I LOVED The Spirits Within. I thought it was excellent. You’re not alone man.
yeah, i mean, most people who’s taste in movies i respect enjoyed it, but it made so little money that it gets held up as an example (along with the super mario bros. movie) of how video game movies are all doomed to failure.
Couldn’t agree more. I also feel like I am watching video game sequence. We had a laugh though of how “practical” Cloud’s sword on one fighting scene. But perhaps for us who really digs video games, however rip-off it’ll be, one thing for sure, we’ll be watching it sooner or later.
the physics of the fight scenes are just… unreal.
nad yeah, the film is the definition of a guilty pleasure. i couldn’t be into that stuff, and NOT see it. and i love the ooey-gooey CG.
You all suck! The Spirits Within Movie sucks too! Advent Children is 100 times better and you know it! I mean… Why would Square even call The Spirits Within Final Fantasy? IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GAME!!! The only connections between the Spirits Within and the game is that some guys name is Cid and that the word Chocobo is written on the back of a ship… And what the hell is wrong with that Ben Afleck look-a-like?!

hahahaha, i suppose that’s fair. i’ve never been that into the games, so that’s not something that bothered me about FF:TSW.
you can’t post stuff about something you dont understand if you dont pay the game dont watch the films and as for TSW it was shit it had no story or guide line of understanding it was crap
