stars is the first band I found through last.fm, not by their excellent recommendation system, but because all of my 'neighbors' were listening to them, and i'd never heard of them. it's cool, because they way outside of my typical tastes. sure, 'set yourself on fire' has the offbeat harmonies, complex structures, and layered instrumentation that I love, but it's pretty mellow. which, of course, makes them a great date concert. which made for an excellent counterpoint for our "Nobody loves you" party the next night. (I should have more to say about the show, but it was pretty much as expected. very mellow, with lots of indie kids standing around pretending to be bored).
Melanie has been getting ready for the party for a couple weeks, with a (very) little help from me. example:
I come home one night, and head into our room to change. on the doorknob is a pair of red underwear. I pick them up (god knows why) and ask Melanie "did you buy new underwear?"
right after asking, I realize it's a thong, and I know my wife doesn't wear thongs.
"no, why?"
(squick)
"the were on our doorknob"
"oh, they're probably from Darcy."
Squick.
Melanie explained that she'd asked Darcy for a thong to add to her breakup paraphernalia posters (also included burned and torn pictures of couples, restraining orders, and emo poetry). Darcy later explained that the thong was a prop from a show, and had never been worn.
the party was pretty awesome, although we had way more people than we expected. we didn't any pictures, since we hid the camera. fortunately people were very well behaved.
Sam came, but didn't bring his valentine's mix (and i was too lazy to download it), which is ok, since the party very quickly overpowered my stereo. or, at least, the volume of my stereo that i was willing to subject my neighbors to. of the mix i did play here are the
Top 5 'Nobody Loves You' Songs:
5 - Pedro the lion - Bad Diary Days everybody thinks 'yeah, i remember when it was cool to be emo', but it's not so emo it brings down the party.
4 - The Beatles - For No One possibly the best 'lost love' sng ever written, so good it nearly brings down the party.
3 - Fear of Pop - In Love william shatner + ben folds = cheesy, in an awesome kinda way.
2 - Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart yummy 80's nostalgia. the average age of our party attendees meant most people had actually had a post-breakup crying session to this song.
1 - Adam Sandler - Sombeody Kill Me hilariously self-deprecating. fucking ace.
