yesterday i led a meeting on upgrading to ArchiCAD 9 (from 7.0). if you've been following me since last february, you should be laughing already. of the people in the room, the only one who's used archicad less than me, is the new girl who started a week ago. This is what happens when you have a reputation for being 'good with computers'. I've used archicad 9 for a day and a half. the one project that i upgraded (which involves temporarily archiving the project), has been worked on by the guy who sits next to me for a couple weeks. yet i'm still the one giving the presentation.
granted, since i do pay attention to things, everyone in the room (except my boss) took a fair amount of notes. yes, this mean my boss will be asking me to repeat myself in a week once the rest of the projects are upgraded.
the other reason that i shouldn't be giving the presentation is that I HATE ARCHICAD. yeah, ok, it's cool that i'm at a firm where they don't cave to the Autodesk monopoly and its pitch black past. but that they do it because archicad runs on machines that look prettier? please. there are better alternatives.
the number one thing i miss about autocad is HEIDI. granted, i'm trying to run an OpenGL accelerated application on a mac with a 32 MB graphics card, and one that's not running tiger. an equivalent x86 machine could handle autocad, barely. but i seriously spend most of my day waiting for my view to refresh.
fortunately i managed to keep from making too many digs at archicad, and the ones i did make got laughs from my coworkers. after all, archicad 9 does finally allow hotkeying drafting tools (line, wall, etc) to single keys. (archicad 7 only allows hotkeying of menu functions, and only to key combinations, like command+option+f). so at least now i can spend less time mousing around the screen. and more time waiting for my machine to catch up to me.

I seriously wish that I could have seen you give that presentation. Not only would I have the joy of watching you try to be serious (because as much as I hear about you being serious at work, I can’t imagine it at all), but it would be watching you try to be serious about something that normally makes you flail and swear like a sailor.
