current tune: the appleseed cast - innocent vigilant ordinary
last week, melanie and i decided to try being vegan for a week. mainly because melanie wants to, and i'm happy to eat anything. it would be prohibitively difficult for her to make two seperate meals twice a day. not that i wouldn't happily make my own, but the situation would approach ridiculousness very quickly. it was a week long experiment, and we broke down and ate ice cream and brownies over last weekend. but she tried to get us back on the horse on monday, and plan proper meals this week.
now, the only meal i really objected to was the tofu sammich that we had tuesday of the first week. my main objection to veganism is when tofu (or a variety of other veggie products) try to emulate meat or cheese.
i have an apology to make. i went all crazy following the tofu sammich incident (where my wife made me a tofu sammich again this monday), and posted about it all over. this is because i'm retarded and couldn't manage to look at the sammich and notice that my excellent wifest had not made me a tofu sammich, as i assumed. i shouldn't have posted about it everywhere, i should have just asked what was up in the morning when she handed it to me. or i should have e-mailed her about it before lunch. or i should have talked about it when we got home.
but i didn't. because i thought i'd lost any choice in the matter, and rebellion seemed more emotionally salving.
but even the editted version of my comment about tofu was wrong. i don't hate tofu. i like fried tofu pouches in sushi rolls. and i LOVE tofu chimichungas. it might be that i would like regular chimichungas just as much, but i've never had them, so i don't know. here's the thing. i grew up on meat and potatoes. american cooking. tuna casserole. mac and cheese. it wasn't until i moved in with josh that i had a meal, any meal, involving onions, or green peppers, or cayenne pepper. since then i've been trying any new food, because i realize that i don't hate these things, just because my parents did. or, more specifically, my dad did. i don't mind eating vegan dinners, and mostly vegan lunches, because sarah kramer has awesome recipes. and they all gete me to try new things i didn't know i liked. and they mostly avoid the "meat/cheese substititute" problem.
it's not so much that i dislike the tofu or other "substitute" veggies, it's that all these people preach about how veganism is an advancement, an evolution, and eating meat is such a neanderthal thing to do, and then they go trying to make up ways to fake out the meat and cheese their taste buds demand. but that's a different rant, and has nothing to do with me being an asshat to my wife when she was being wonderful.

hey adam how are you? my best friend is a vegan and she has been for a long time now. i definitely agree with your point of view! when we go to her house we usually stick to pasta and vegetarian sauce because most sauces have cheese in it. did you know that? she taught me alot. keep up the good work good luck!
