The Genius Bar

current tune: the arcade fire - naive melody (live w/ david byrne)
via the brooklyn vegan

last night the power adapter for melanie's ibook gave out, so we were both using the same computer. so on my lunch i ran to the apple store on michigan avenue. really, the genius bar would be more appropriately titled "the genius deli". you don't just plop yourself on a stool and wait to be served, you get your ticket and wait for them to call your name. that's not really a complaint. it's still the best computer costumer service there is. it's not that they're any nicer than other computer companies, it's just that the "interface" is just that much more slick. that said, if i didn't live near an apple store, i'd find sun's customer service reps waaaaaay more friendly. but then, sun doesn't sell personal computers.
so, tonight we'll have our own computers again. good, since last night i read far enough in Gaim's faq to figure out why it wouldn't launch. apparently it too, (like xchat) includes dll's to allow TCL scripting. which (almost) no one on windows has. and since there's no apt4exe to make windows run like linux, you have to go in and delete the TCL.dll, or install TCL.

since we're talking about vegans (ok we're not, but i referenced the brooklyn vegan), I ran out of ham and cheese, so today my sandwich is vegan cheese and fake pepperoni. i object to most "fake meat" products, because i think the concept is stupid and backwards, but pepperoni is only pepperoni by virtue of its spices. anyway, back on topic: this sandwich is pretty damn good, and i might consider eating it regularly. which would put me substantially closer to full-time veganism.

How do you like imacs? I’ve heard that they’re killer with graphics, have you found this to be the case?

    here’s the deal.
there is _no_ hardware advantage to macs, or the PPC platform in general.
the reason people* prefer macs for graphics is because both quark and photoshop were originally designed for apple, and those people are resistant to change. at this point, x86_64 is pretty far beyond anything apple’s come out with, so i’ll stick to intel/AMD and linux. or M$ if all else fails.
