Playing nice with the iBook

Seriously, does windows file sharing ever work, for anyone? (at least, anyone who's not in a domain, with a WINS server). Wanna see my blood pressure rise? just open "Network Neighborhood"

Ever since the wifest's iBook went in for repairs and came back with a new hard drive, she hasn't been able to browse my computer (running Windows Media Center Edition). granted, there's always been SFTP available via cygwin sshd, but the secure wrapper on those packets makes it a lot slower than it needs to be for something on a local network.

last night i finally got the iBook to see my windows shares. The first thing that i'd forgotten, is that you need to go to System Preferences > Sharing > Windows Sharing and turn that on. Samba isn't enabled by default on OS X.

but the problem we've always had is that she can see my computer in finder when she browses Network >Walton(the name of my workgroup, MSHome for most people), but when she tries to connect, finder goes into beachball mode for a good 10 minutes before saying

The Alias "NEMESIS" could not be opened, because the original item could not be found

for some reason, the only way to connect is in finder click Go > Connect to Server..., and manually type in smb://196.168.x.x where .x.x is the address of your windows computer. if you don't type SMB, finder defaults to AFP.

Actually the file sharing in my home network is pretty well done, no domain and no wins. I’ve never tried with a Mac before, so I’m sure it’s much tougher.

i’ve always had peer-to-peer setups glitch out on me randomly, between windows clients. then again, my ex-roommate and i used to occassionally take our computers to work and share files there, too(in a different workgroup), so that could have confused things.
