Celebrity culture uniformly leads to a degradation of public discussion. When someone is a standout in a particular field (e.g. bram cohen in software engineering), everything they say
, whether related to their field of expertise or not, is taken as worthwhile. meanwhile a person with a particularly unglamorous degree in, perhaps, urban planning, has a lower chance of being heard. not that i'm an expert in either field, but i know better than to start telling people how the bittorrent protocol should be improved.
